Dance of insights powering Self-transformation and Mental Fitness CULTure

We recently concluded Mindfulness & Mentalfitness Cohort-8. I must admit that women👩🏻🤝👩🏻 powered the uniqueness in this cohort, which included my spouse taking this program for the second time.

Embracing Uncertainty
With Ease

During the last six weeks, I could not post coaching stories as I was busy redesigning my website (launched end of march) and coaching a new cohort on my new leadership program, “Creating Winning Culture.”

True game changer who secured a job in FAANG’s crown jewel.

Today’s story comes to us via Seshu, a senior IT professional with 20+ years of IT experience, whom I had the pleasure of working with almost a decade before our paths connected again2️⃣ years ago.

When I spoke to him, Seshu mentioned that he felt trapped🪤 professionally, as if he was stagnating and could not break through🚀 to the next level at his job. He was looking for support to help him realize his untapped potential⚡ and chart a new path in life.

Almost a decade back, I led him as part of my team. When I asked him, what made him choose me, Seshu mentioned that he had good memories of working with me almost a decade earlier and felt that working again with me would be well served by breaking through his situation.

Seshu felt that my approach to guiding and motivating the team to do their best and achieve their potential was something he saw in real life and wanted to learn from and emulate. Seshu trusted me, and It is now my turn to deliver on his goals by helping him with “Personal Transformation.”

🏅Maximizing Awareness –  Awareness provides the right decision-making capability. I’m glad this was the first takeaway mentioned by him!

🏅Anger management – Seshu had mentioned to me that he had the propensity to lose control a bit when he lost his temper; using our meditation and other mental techniques, we were able to work with him to retain his calm even when angry and be open to listening to the other person’s side

🏅Prioritizing Family time – Reprioritizing what is most important. One of the pleasant surprises of this exercise was his willingness to acknowledge that his time spent with family was not as focused as it could be. With his clarity, Seshu focused on dedicated time spent with his spouse and kids, which benefited his family dynamics immensely

🏅Developing Empathy – Connected perhaps with the first point, Seshu tended to be impatient regarding expectations from his family, specifically his spouse. Using the techniques we used to encourage empathy and understanding, he has learned to collaborate rather than dictate, and he has learned to accept the other person’s point of view

🏅Channelling and refocusing on Beliefs – another critical aspect of his personality in which he found a difference was his tendency to fixate on the negatives (which was a major limiting belief) and reframe that to focus on positive emotions

🏅Personal health improvements with a disciplined focus on diet and exercise – The newfound mental clarity and visualizing the end game helped him overcome his dependence on pills to control his high sugar levels. He could control it using a sensible diet and exercise!

I also happened to discuss with him what advice he would give to people in similar situations as he was to break their barriers to get to the next level. Our conversation led to some critical suggestions for such candidates who were stuck in their professional journey:

🧭Identify your key strengths and apply them to applicable situations

🧭Aligning with one’s core values – congruence of one’s actions with one’s core values helps unleash our potential and creates better decision making

Lastly, Seshu mentioned that everyone does every activity twice, once in his head and then in real life. This can only be done if you have clarity on your goals and vision and reach there on your own.

The fact is that coaching of the right kind can cut the journey short and make it less stressful and more joyful.

That, in the end, is their most satisfactory response!

Breaking free from the myths of “Stability” and Soaring High

Today’s story comes via yet another ex-colleague Krish Sharma who was faced with a classic problem– the inability to let go of security versus tapping into full potential even though the job placed him at odds with his mental peace and put his family relations under strain as well.

When I caught up with krishn a few years back, he was facing a decision-making dilemma. He was a naturally non-confrontational person; hence found it difficult to say NO or effectively delegate tasks to his team. He was getting caught between a demanding project on the one hand and managing team dynamics on the other. He was caught in a spiral of long (16-18) hour workdays and stagnating growth, as he could not spare any time to hone his skills and develop his competencies.

Despite all these issues at work, he was struggling to take the one decision he knew was necessary, i.e., quitting his full-time job. He stated that there was a need for more adequate opportunities in an equivalent organization and financial issues. The core issue, however, was much more profound – it is what we find most challenging to let go of; the myth of “job security” that comes with a full-time job in any reputable organization. However, when we weigh this decision, we forget that any organization has the right to fire us anytime; what will happen to the fabled Job security then?

Krishn had recently moved to Canada🍁 and struggled to adjust to the new financial realities and team dynamics of the new team he had joined. That, coupled with a second baby👼 on the way for him, made him highly stressed and anxious😰 for his and his family’s👨👩👦 financial stability and security.

Krishn used to work on my project, and we both interacted and worked together successfully, so there was enough trust and familiarity to get started. When we started, I worked on emphasizing the following key aspects:

A job is just that – a job. No job offers permanent job security; hence one should make decisions professionally based on what is suitable for one’s mental balance and financial objectives, not the nature of the employment.

He mentioned that once we got on the “Personel Transformation Journey,” he started to

Soaring high with Confidence in his abilities or self-belief finally gave him the Courage to step out of the toxic situation.

Increased Self-Worth led him to earn gainfully after leaving his previous job, and pay & job satisfaction was higher quickly!

Think Entrepreneurial – Owing to higher self-belief and Confidence, his risk-taking ability gave him the Courage to pursue his dreams of becoming an entrepreneur.

Have a balanced life and their role in stress management and attaining a balance between work and personal life.

While these are qualitative benefits, he mentioned some quantitative benefits as well.

🏆His compensation💵 currently is way higher than when he was at a full-time job with manageable work hours a day.

🏆With limited working hours, time⏲️ devoted to his family increased proportionately, which has benefited his family life materially.

One of the critical things I emphasize to all our participants is the importance of showing Courage and taking that essential 1️⃣st step🪜. His first courageous decision created a domino effect of cascading positive events.

In Short, he has reaffirmed my core belief – Courage is the key; Emotions below Courage are harmful and destructive. Once you show Courage and make the right and not an easy decision, the sequence of events turns positive more often than not!

During these decisions, please be clear about your 1️⃣strengths, 2️⃣values, and 3️⃣identity. These three attributes make “Emotional Agility”.

Emotional Agility is vital for a successful “Personal Transformation Journey.”

A “Peer Review” from a CXO

Today’s story is an interesting one since it has the potential to make a larger impact. KK Bhagchandani, also known as “KKB”, has been one of my supporters as well as a program participant for “Mindfulness & MentalFitness” & “Effective Leadership”.

KKB is an accomplished business leader, a CXO who has straddled the boundaries of IT, healthcare, and life sciences for more than 30 years, with stints across Industry leaders in the Pharma and Life Sciences industry globally.

When KKB expressed an interest in eventually moving full-time into the leadership coaching area himself and expressed a desire to attend my mindfulness and leadership programs to get a “Lay of the land,” so to speak, I was intrigued to see what his experience would teach him and me!

His initial motivations, therefore, were more to

One of the things I always ask industry leaders who come to me is, “Why Me”?

This, I have found, provides clarity about their motivations and initial feelings about attending my programs. In KKB’s case, this question elicited a comprehensive and well-thought-out response.

KK highlighted 2️⃣ main reasons for opting for my programs over the myriad options available.

1️⃣Substance over Style: KK highlighted the natural or put-upon flamboyance that many leadership coaches emphasize, but he opted for our course since he saw honesty and authenticity in our approach

2️⃣Comfort level: KK also stated our past familiarity, and since he was familiar with my personality and style, he felt immediately more comfortable with me.

One of the things he mentioned as we went along was a relatively new realization for him that professionals across industries and segments face multiple issues. It is quite OK to take help to try and deal with them!

KK mentioned a few critical things about our program that he saw as observations:

KKB mentioned that Sincerity of effort and the intent to truly get through to our participants, to make a lasting difference in the mindset and thought process, was appreciated and noticed by KKB!

From a personal and professional standpoint, KKB also pointed to the benefits he saw in being part of the program, albeit he was honest enough to acknowledge that his participation and attendance could have been better. However, this was not really in his control, as his professional commitments and some personal medical issues interfered with the course timings.

✅ Understanding the value and process of structuring information – KKB mentioned that his work profile and inherent skill sets make him a “big picture” guy but somewhere, the value of organization of data gets lost in this approach. Our program helped him appreciate the value of well-planned data organization and structuring

✅ Correlating the issues and topics to real-life situations – Our attempt to always provide a real-world context to the issues and problems being faced by the participants and provide solutions grounded in practical terms resonated with KK and was helpful to him in gauging his issues

Adaptive leadership awareness – One of the things we always emphasize in our Leadership programs is to learn to be open to feedback and be adaptive and flexible in our team management approach, and this helped KKB to realize the need to practice the same in his professional environment as well

Confidence to do it on his own – As mentioned earlier, KKB wants to get into the Leadership Coaching industry. This experience gave him some valuable insights and the confidence that he could do it himself, albeit his style might be a lot different than mine!

 

With his natural sense of style and confident public speaking abilities, KKB offered to help me improve these facets, and I’m eagerly looking forward to working on some of these aspects with him.

Shining Through “Scars” – A Warrior Dad

Soundar Subramanian, a fellow coach whom I have known for over two years, approached me a couple of months back to enroll in one of my programs.  After learning about him, I felt Soundar is fighting like a true warrior for his “special needs child.”

Soundar shared that, for the last decade, his life took a downward trend📉. Many aspects of goodness, wellness, and greatness started to be depleted by physical and mental health❤️‍🩹 challenges and frequent hospital🏥 admissions. Along with those, his Productivity and Performance took a hit, made poor decisions that led to the loss of money and mounting debt.  He only longed for a better life and to bounce back, yet that eluded him for the past 🔟 years.  However, his family never gave up.

When Soundar approached me, I asked “why,” he said he had been noticing program benefits from other participants and felt it was the time for him.  After attending the program, Soundar mentioned that the “Mindfulness Mental Fitness” program gave him the light to find a better life and the possibility to bounce back.

She Positively Channeled Her Energy …and She Transformed!

The pleasure of coaching Savita Pawar and her daughters was immense, especially when one of her daughters is currently a national-level rifle shooting champion🏆

Today’s Story comes via Savita, an experienced IT professional and a leader with whom I had the pleasure of working closely for many years.

Our previous healthy working relationship and her trust in my approach helped her join the program with a curious mind🧠

I have always seen Savita as a go-getter 🏃♂️with a fairly assertive approach.

One of the things she told me when she approached me was that her network of friends, colleagues, and family always advised her to focus on her weakness, i.e., her being overly assertive which had become a recurring topic.

Savita has also been attending extra sessions of relevance to keep up to date on the techniques and take feedback. She mentioned that she sometimes lapses into old behavior, but follow-up sessions reassured her that this was normal and expected.

When A Couple Practices Mindfulness 1+1>2

A famous saying is “1+1> 2” when the synergies are positively aligned.

360° Impact Story – Personal |Profesional |Physical |Emotional

Today’s story comes to us via a former colleague in the company I used to work for – to say we were colleagues is accurate. However, we did not interact with or know each other back then!

Interestingly, it is via LinkedIn that he learned about my Effective Leadership program. Initially, Arun Alex was skeptical and hesitant mainly because there weren’t any apparent burning issues 🔥 in his life.

But isn’t it that the slow ember♨️ that take the joy away from everyday life are more detrimental?

At least so was the case with him, which he soon realized after a few conversations, eventually leading him to join the program even before I could complete the details!

Post the first few sessions, with some idea of Mindfulness, he practiced a few of the techniques and the meditation process as part of the program, and I could sense the “lightbulb” 💡 moment in him. He realized that the techniques were relevant to not only his professional but personal life as well!

In conversations we had later, he explained that he could see an immediate change in his body and mind.

One of the critical things he could see with applying mindfulness was to get out of the “Rat Race” of life 🏃, appreciate precious moments of life as they happened, and not get bogged down by the stress of what’s coming tomorrow, which helped him enjoy the present.

  • Come to terms with this fear and haunting – One of the things he stated has stayed with me and encapsulates one of Life’s great challenges brilliantly. He said that going through our program helped him realize that we go through life haunted by things that have happened in our past or petrified by events that may or may not happen in the future.
  • Manage his ego & Practice acceptance and Self-empathy, enabling him to come to terms with the inevitability of falling short. One could fall short of one’s expectations or those of the organization/boss we are working for. Still, he learned to take such things in his stride and remain motivated and calm even when such things happen in his professional life. He also felt he could set more realistic, practical goals for himself going forward.
  • Achieve physical Fitness- By articulating internally about the consequences of eating unhealthy food whenever he was tempted, he developed the willpower to reject such cravings and lost 15kgs in 3Mths! This, in turn, added to his general confidence.
  • Increase His focus in a professional environment, in meetings and gatherings; he learned to focus on the discussion and not get distracted by other emails or texts.
  • Prioritize his time and avoid getting dragged into unnecessary meetings that did not add any value to him and/or he had no contribution.
  • Handle Situations with more maturity– By taking a bit more time to react to what someone said or something happened, he reacted proportionately, creating a relatively more relaxed environment at home and at work.
  • Stop the need to chase the myth of “Multitasking” – Instead of fighting fires everywhere, he learned to focus on one task at a time, which helped improve his productivity.
  • Accepting oneself – Another learning he mentioned was self-improvement through self-acceptance.

By accepting and facing his mistakes and being motivated to keep working on himself, he found the program to be highly beneficial to his personal and professional life and so much so that his journey continues.

Arun also achieved higher career growth in his professional life by aligning himself with his natural strengths.

As for me, one of the key takeaways from his initial hesitancy was that, in many cases, people may not even be aware that their life could be so much more meaningful and beautiful even while attaining all professional and personal success.

Values Based Leadership – Driving Vision

As a mid-management professional, Vijaykrishna Ramalingam was explicitly looking for direction in his career and was highly inquisitive about behaviors he needed to develop to excel in his role and become effective. As a mid-manager, he sought direction and clarity on his leadership journey.   Vijay wants to make sure his career choices have internal alignment to have a fulfilled leadership role.
